Pregnancy may be over, but your body is still adapting.

Between recovering from pregnancy and delivery, feeding and carrying your baby, disrupted sleep, and returning to everyday activities, the postpartum period can place entirely new demands on your body.

At Kinetic Chiropractic & Massage in Post Falls, Idaho, Dr. Hannah Huerta provides individualized postpartum chiropractic care focused on helping mothers improve mobility, address musculoskeletal discomfort, and gradually return to the activities they enjoy.

Whether you're a few weeks postpartum or your baby is already several months old, your care is based on your recovery, your body, and your goals.

Your Body Continues to Change After Pregnancy

The physical changes associated with pregnancy don't immediately disappear after delivery.

Your body continues adapting while you're simultaneously caring for a newborn.

New daily activities can also create physical demands you may not have experienced before:

  • Holding and carrying your baby

  • Feeding and nursing positions

  • Repetitive lifting

  • Carrying an infant car seat

  • Bending over a crib or changing table

  • Spending more time sitting

  • Interrupted sleep

  • Returning to walking and exercise

  • Caring for older children while recovering

These demands can contribute to muscular tension, stiffness, changes in movement, and musculoskeletal discomfort.

Postpartum chiropractic care at Kinetic focuses on understanding how your body is moving now and determining what may help support your recovery.

What Does Postpartum Chiropractic Care Look Like?

There isn't one standard postpartum treatment plan.

Your first visit begins with understanding what you're experiencing and what you'd like to get back to doing.

Depending on your individual presentation, care may incorporate:

Chiropractic Care

Individualized chiropractic techniques may be used to address areas of joint restriction and improve comfortable movement.

Soft-Tissue & Myofascial Therapy

Soft-tissue techniques may be incorporated to address areas of muscular tension and restriction.

Mobility

Targeted mobility work may help address stiffness and movement restrictions that developed during pregnancy or postpartum recovery.

Movement-Based Rehabilitation

As appropriate, simple exercises may be introduced to improve strength, stability, and confidence with movement.

If your needs fall outside the scope of chiropractic care, Dr. Hannah may recommend evaluation by your OB/GYN, primary-care provider, pelvic-floor physical therapist, or another appropriate healthcare professional.

Neck & Upper Back Tension After Having a Baby

New parents spend a lot of time looking down.

Feeding, holding, rocking, changing, and carrying your baby can create repetitive positions that place additional demands on the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Some mothers begin noticing:

  • Neck stiffness

  • Upper trapezius tension

  • Shoulder discomfort

  • Mid-back tightness

  • Discomfort associated with prolonged feeding positions

Your evaluation can include looking at mobility and muscular tension throughout these regions and discussing strategies for making repetitive daily activities more comfortable.

Low Back, Pelvic & Hip Discomfort Postpartum

Your low back, pelvis, hips, and surrounding musculature undergo significant changes during pregnancy.

After delivery, these areas continue adapting as activity levels and physical demands change again.

Postpartum care may include evaluation of:

  • Lumbar mobility

  • Pelvic and SI joint mechanics

  • Hip mobility

  • Gluteal muscular function

  • Hip flexor tension

  • Movement patterns

  • Muscular strength and stability

Treatment recommendations are based on your individual findings rather than simply treating every postpartum patient the same way.

Returning to Exercise After Pregnancy

For many active women, one of the biggest postpartum questions is:

"When can I get back to exercising?"

There isn't one timeline that applies to everyone.

Your delivery, recovery, symptoms, previous activity level, and recommendations from your obstetric healthcare provider all matter.

Once you've been appropriately cleared to increase activity, Dr. Hannah can help evaluate your mobility and movement as you work toward returning to activities such as:

  • Walking

  • Hiking

  • Strength training

  • Running

  • Cycling

  • Skiing

  • Recreational sports

  • General fitness

As a former collegiate cross-country and track athlete and Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician®, Dr. Hannah particularly enjoys helping active patients work toward their movement and performance goals.

What to Expect at Your First Postpartum Appointment

Your first visit starts with a conversation.

Dr. Hannah will ask about your pregnancy and delivery, current symptoms, recovery, activity level, and what you hope to accomplish with care.

An appropriate musculoskeletal evaluation may include assessment of:

  • Mobility

  • Areas of muscular tension

  • Joint restriction

  • Movement patterns

  • Strength and stability when appropriate

Dr. Hannah will then explain her findings and recommendations.

Your care should progress with your recovery—not according to a predetermined schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions About Postpartum Chiropractic

When can I see a chiropractor after having a baby?

There isn't one universal timeline for beginning postpartum chiropractic care. Timing depends on your delivery, recovery, symptoms, and individual medical circumstances. If you've had a C-section, significant delivery complication, or other medical concern, Dr. Hannah may recommend clearance or coordination with your obstetric healthcare provider before certain treatment or exercise.

Can I receive chiropractic care after a C-section?

Potentially, but care should take your surgical recovery into consideration. Treatment positioning and techniques may need to be modified, particularly early in recovery. Dr. Hannah will discuss your delivery and recovery before determining what care is appropriate.

Can postpartum chiropractic help with back pain from holding my baby?

Holding, feeding, lifting, and carrying a baby can contribute to muscular tension and mechanical discomfort. Dr. Hannah can evaluate your musculoskeletal symptoms and determine whether chiropractic care, soft-tissue treatment, mobility work, rehabilitation, or another form of care is appropriate.

Do I need to have seen a chiropractor during pregnancy?

No. You can begin care postpartum even if you didn't receive chiropractic treatment during your pregnancy.

Can I bring my baby to my appointment?

Contact Kinetic when scheduling if you need to bring your baby so our team can help you understand what to expect and make your visit as comfortable as possible.

Can Dr. Hannah help me return to running or working out?

Once you've received appropriate medical clearance for postpartum exercise, Dr. Hannah can evaluate musculoskeletal mobility and movement and help develop an appropriate progression based on your individual goals.

What if I need pelvic-floor rehabilitation?

Chiropractic care does not replace pelvic-floor physical therapy. If your symptoms suggest that pelvic-floor evaluation would be beneficial, Dr. Hannah can recommend that you consult an appropriately trained pelvic-health provider.

Does Dr. Hannah also see babies and children?

Yes. Dr. Hannah provides pediatric chiropractic care in addition to pregnancy and postpartum care. Dr. Sylvia Tripp and Dr. Haiden Garrett also see pediatric patients at Kinetic.
